Happy Birthday Charles Dickens!

This year marks the 200th anniversary of the birth of Charles Dickens, who is one of England's most famous writers, and probably the most popular novelist of Victorian times. Dickens was born in Portsmouth, in the south of England, on the 7th February 1812. There are many events being held this year in Portsmouth and around the world to celebrate his birthday.

Dickens wrote many famous short stories and novels, a lot of which are still popular today. Some of these include: Great Expectations, A Tale of Two Cities, A Christmas Carol and the Adventures of Oliver Twist, to name but a few.

Oliver is the story of an orphan, called Oliver Twist, who lives a miserable life in a workhouse. He travels to London, where he meets the Artful Dodger, who is the leader of a gang of young pickpockets, and Fagin, the old criminal trainer of the gang. Oliver has been made into films and musicals, with many songs which are very well-known. You can listen to one of the most famous songs, "Food, Glorious Food" from the 1968 musical below!

Este año se celebra el segundo centenario del nacimiento de Charles Dickens, uno de los escritores ingleses más famosos, y probablemente el novelista más famoso de la era victoriana. Dickens nació en Portsmouth, en el sur de Inglaterra, el 7 de febrero de 1812. Este año se celebran muchos actos tanto en Portsmouth cono en otros lugares del mundo para celebrar este aniversario.

Dickens escribió historias y novelas famosas, muchas de las cuales siguen siendo populares hoy en día, entre ellas Grandes esperanzas, Historia de dos ciudades, Canción de Navidad y Las aventuras de Oliver Twist, por nombrar sólo algunas.

Oliver es la historia de un huérfano llamado Oliver Twist que vive una vida triste en un hospicio. Viaja a Londres, donde conoce al Artful Dodger, que es el cabecilla de una banda de jóvenes carteristas, y a Fagin, el entrenador de la banda. La novela ha sido llevada al cine y a los musicales, en los que aparecen muchas canciones conocidas.
